Deceptive Arguments

Yesterday I came across two articles and instantly realised how deceptive are the arguments presented in those articles.

Hyperloop pilot in India is planning to reduce Bengaluru-Chennai travel time to just about 30 minutes. Currently it takes about 6 to 7 hours by road or train and 1 hour by flight. So the time take by the Hyperloop pods is going to be similar to that by aeroplanes except - to quote - for "security checks, taxing, boarding and exits".

The security checks at the airports are there for a reason and I don't see why there won't be similar checks at the Hyperloop Terminals. In fact, any mishap has a potential to damage all other pods in the tube, the security check might be more stringent!! Boarding process will be similar to that of planes, albeit probably a bit faster if the number of passengers are lesser as compared to the plane. There will be safety requirements, which would need passengers to be briefed every time. And then even if it is just 30 mins travel, passengers surely need to be fed and given drinks to make the travel commercially viable. That means you would need to upload the food and beverages to the pods.

All this will end up have similar time spent even for Hyperloop and wouldn't really save the time as it seems to claim. You would end up having similar timings for Hyperloop as well!!

Another news was about increasing the daily withdrawal limit from 4.5K to 10K followed by restricting the free withdrawals to 3 per month. Restricting the free withdrawals to 3 per month is supposedly to discourage cash usage.

Now let's look into this fallacy. Assuming I have 30K cash available in my account for the spend in the month. I could use debit card or netbanking or cash to spend that money, but I won't be sure which channel I would end up using. With increase in the cash in the market, the merchants have started asking for cash instead of digital ways, which prompts me to carry some cash with me to be sure. I have two choices - withdraw only a small amount - say 2K - to cater to the cash purchases and then withdraw more as I need through the month. With this, I would be able to withdraw 6K in three trips for free. And then what if I need more? Either I need to get into bank and do withdrawal or I need to pay for additional withdrawal at ATM. No there's smarter way. Withdraw 10K at a time, even if you may not need it and then you will spend it in cash because you have it in cash!!

and boom ... there goes the cashless dream!!
